1858

Founding of Marqués de Riscal by D. Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga in 1858. The birth of a dream.

1862

Marqués de Riscal bottled its first wines in 1862, and in just five years the first awards were received. It is the oldest bottled wine in Rioja.

1883

In 1883 the winery was expanded and the building known as “El Palomar” was built.

1895

Marqués de Riscal is the first non-French wine to be awarded the Diploma of Honour at the Bordeaux Exhibition in 1895. This diploma is added to the wine label.

20th century

In the first quarter of the century, Marqués de Riscal incorporated gold mesh into its bottles as a guarantee of quality to avoid counterfeiting.

1972–1980

In 1972, Marqués de Riscal began producing the first white wines from Rueda. In 1974, it introduced the French Sauvignon Blanc variety to the area. In 1980, it became one of the wineries that promoted the DO Rueda.

1986

In 1986, Barón de Chirel began to be produced, a precursor to what could be called the wines of the new era of Rioja.

21st Century

With the arrival of the new century, Marqués de Riscal begins Project 2000, which will mark a step towards the future with the construction of the San Vicente winery and the start of tourist visits.

2006

In 2006, La Ciudad del Vino was opened, with a hotel designed by the famous Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry.

2015

In 2015, a historic tasting of 114 vintages from the private collection of Marqués de Riscal took place with industry professionals from around the world.

2018

All vineyards owned by Marqués de Riscal in Rueda obtain organic certification.

2022

Marqués de Riscal returns to the “Plaza de Burdeos” with the launch of Tapias de Marqués de Riscal and the celebration of a tasting of historic vintages

2023

Marqués de Riscal has been named the second best vineyard and winery in the world for the third consecutive year.
