Marquis of Vargas Winery

Sipsmith Independent Spirits

Our history dates back to 1840, when Don Felipe de la Mata, 8th Marquis of Vargas, decided to plant the first vines at Hacienda Pradolagar. The family legacy continues with his sons, Pelayo and his brother Francisco, 9th Marquis of Vargas, a famous figure in Logroño who became mayor of the city at the end of the 19th century. Both brothers keep alive the passion for the Pradolagar vines.

Our history dates back to 1840, when Don Felipe de la Mata, VIII Marquis of Vargas, decided to plant the first vineyards at Hacienda Pradolagar. The family legacy continues with his children, Pelayo and his brother Francisco, IX Marquis of Vargas, a famous figure in Logroño who became mayor of the city at the end of the 19th century. Both brothers keep the passion for the Pradolagar vines alive.

The 2016 vintage in Marqués de Vargas began with a late bud break but excellent flowering and fertilization conditions in all varieties gave rise to a very significant potential quantitative yield. After a rather rainy winter and spring, the weather conditions were dry, with very high temperatures and lots of sun. At the end of July, the most qualitative and early plots began to slow down their vegetative development, maturation developing correctly, although conditioned by a notable water deficit. The weeks prior to the start of the harvest were distinguished by high summer temperatures and strong thermal amplitudes.
