Sipsmith Independent Spirits

Martin Miller will always be remembered for his pioneering, tireless, and unconventional spirit. His pursuit of perfection and his determination to create the finest gin led him to Iceland in search of the purest water, a journey that continues to define us today. Martin Miller's legacy lives on as new generations of gin drinkers discover and cherish Martin Miller's Gin, just as he intended.

The story begins in a bar in Notting Hill, London, during the spring of 1998, after three friends had some disappointing gin and tonics.

It was then that Martin Miller challenged his two friends to revolutionize the world of gin. The idea was to create a modern version of a classic gin, one that would appeal to a new generation of gin drinkers.

Martin Miller, a traditionalist, focused on the core components of a good gin and the various traditional methods of production. He experimented by splitting the process into two separate distillations and discovered that the best combination was to distill the juniper and the earthier botanicals first.

Next, the bitter orange and lemon peels are distilled before being combined again into a single gin distillate. This gives Martin Miller's Gin a much better balance between the more heady juniper and the bright, refreshing citrus notes.

Since gin is 60% water, Martin Miller knew that water purity would be crucial. His quest for perfection led him to the small village of Borgarnes on Iceland's remote west coast, about 75 km north of Reykjavik. Here, Icelandic spring water originates from snowfalls more than 800 years ago, which later formed as ice in dormant volcanic calderas. The deepest, oldest ice melts from the volcano's heat and loses its mineral content after an 800-year filtration process through volcanic rock.

This slower release of Martin Miller's Gin aromas, its characteristically complex nose where the balance between juniper and citrus is most evident, also reduces the rate of evaporation of the spirit, creating a softer warmth from the alcohol, resulting in a more rounded and smooth mouthfeel.
