Tomatin Distillery

Tomatin Distillery

It is difficult to pinpoint the origins of whisky production in Tomatin: before the opening of the formal distillery that operates today, there is reason to believe that whisky production, although illegal, has been an important part of life in the area around Tomatin since the 18th century.

In 2013, we became the first distillery in Scotland to install an environmentally friendly wood pellet-fired steam boiler for use in our production process, with financial support from the Green Investment Bank and RHI. The fuel is wood pellets produced locally in Invergordon by a company called Balcas, which uses renewable electricity and heat and raw materials from local forests.

The wood pellets used to fuel the boiler are made from virgin wood, where two trees are planted for every one harvested, and the wood chips created from the production of the pellets generate electricity, making the production site (just 35 miles from the distillery) self-sufficient and the final product carbon neutral.
