Bodega Protos

Sipsmith Independent Spirits

The company grew very quickly and the first space problems arose. The project continued to develop until the acquisition, in 1986, of a new production winery in Anguix (Burgos) surrounded by old, high-quality vineyards. After multiple modifications, this winery would become the Protos Center for High Production Technology in 2019.

In 2008, Protos built a new winery in Peñafiel, equipped with the latest technology and connected to the old Bodegas Protos facilities, created in 1970 at the foot of the Peñafiel castle, one of the most important fortresses in the region. In the bowels of the mountain there is an aging winery with more than two kilometers of galleries excavated in the earth, while the new winery, designed by architect Richard Rogers (Pritzker Architecture Prize winner) and Alonso Balaguer and Associate Architects), It stands out for its roof, made up of five vaults that imitate barrels that rise from the earth and give the same color as the roofs of most buildings in the area.

Currently, Protos seeks to obtain the maximum expression of each terroir based on a deep respect for natural processes. The different microclimates, the severe selection of the grapes carried out by expert viticulturists and the most modern aging techniques ensure the purest and freshest character of the Tempranillo variety.
