Barcelo

Sipsmith Independent Spirits

Barceló rum originated in 1929, when Julián Barceló arrived in the Dominican Republic with the aim of making a rum that would go down in history as the best in the world. It was just a year later, in 1930, when he founded Barceló & Co. At that time, the young Spaniard was only 26 years old, but he had many dreams, and in a short time he began producing and marketing his first rums throughout the country.

1950
It was not until 1950, after years of experimentation, that the company managed to position itself in the local market. This success was thanks to the formal launch of the Barceló Blanco and Dorado products, very popular among consumers at that time.

1970
In 1970, Ron Barceló Añejo was introduced to the brand's portfolio, with its distinctive amber-colored bottle, which has established itself as the most exported Dominican rum.

80s
In the 1980s, Ron Barceló led the list of favorite national rums and Ron Barceló Imperial was produced, the flagship premium rum of the Dominican Republic. A rum that since its launch has become the leader in its segment, and is to this day the Dominican rum with the most awards from international organizations.

90s
The brand became international, beginning exports to countries such as Spain in 1994, leading to Ron Barceló currently ranking third in the list of spirits in Spain.

2001
Seventy years after the brand was founded, in 2001, a group of Spanish businessmen formed a strategic alliance with Barceló & Co. to market the brand worldwide, with the exception of the Dominican Republic. In 2002, the Barceló & Co. company separated from international operations, giving way to the group of Dominican-Spanish businessmen, the Dominican part formed by the Barceló Díaz family and the García family, thus creating a new company called Añejos Barceló – today Ron Barceló SRL.

2006 - 2019
After being present in 25 international markets, Ron Barceló SRL, fully acquires the Ron Barceló brand, keeping part of the 3rd generation of the Barceló families, Barceló Díaz and García, on the board of directors.
2016: We strengthened our actions in terms of sustainability, specifically carbon neutrality, becoming the first rum in the world to be accredited as Carbon Neutral, which has allowed us to lead the promotion of sustainable development.
2018: Ron Barceló becomes the most exported dark rum according to the IWSR (International Wine and Spirits Research). A feat also achieved in 2019. The brand's presence in more than 80 countries around the world is also consolidated.

Present
In 2016, Ron Barceló became the first rum in the world to be certified as Carbon Neutral. We became the first spirit and rum in the world to form part of the UN Climate Change initiative, Climate Neutral Now.
Ron Barceló Organic is introduced. We acquire carbon credits from formally certified reduction projects from EGE Haina's Los Cocos I and II wind farms.

We are governed by the DOMINICAN RUM standard, which guarantees compliance with the designation of origin of rum, being the first product of a collective brand in the Dominican Republic.
To comply with this standard, rum producers must harvest sugar cane, ferment, distill and age the alcohol in oak barrels for a minimum of one year in the Dominican Republic.
