When you're born in a place like La Horra, you can only love the land and the wine it produces. This is what our family has been doing for almost 250 years: living alongside an austere landscape, battered by winds and punished by extreme weather, but one we have learned to manage and adapt to, in order to bring out the very best in it.

From this land, the Golden Diamond of the Ribera del Duero, only an excellent wine can come out, recognized throughout the world for its uniqueness, aromas and nuances.

In 1777, our family's legacy began, linked to the land and the vine for almost 250 years. Abundio Balbás, our great-great-grandfather, made wine for his own consumption with grapes from his land, which he transported in "boots" made from animal skin.

This practice became a trade, that of "boatmen", which the family has been able to develop and evolve until today it is one of the leading wineries of the DO Ribera del Duero, of which we were founders in 1982.

At the helm of the winery is Juan José Balbás, a staunch defender of our land, who - together with Clara de la Fuente, his wife - has been responsible for bringing the history and wines of Bodegas Balbás to the present day.

Aware that wine is an expression of terroir, he has maintained the family philosophy of being a winegrower first and a winemaker second, just as his father Víctor, and before him his grandfather Abundio, taught him. He summarizes this philosophy as follows: “ The potential of a wine is determined by the quality of the soil and the grapes it produces .” His passion for conveying this unique character has ensured that Balbás wines leave no one indifferent.

Bodegas Balbás faces a promising future with Patricia and María Balbás - seventh generation - who have joined to continue transmitting family values ​​and legacy around the world in the form of unique wines.

A future marked by innovation and absolute respect for the environment, with objectives aligned with the 2030 agenda and the SDGs, involving the entire value chain.
