The Northern Spain Wine Company, CVNE - or 'la Cune', as it is known colloquially in Haro - was founded in 1879 and was one of the first wineries to bottle wine in La Rioja. What began as a project of two brothers (Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa) continues today in the hands of the same family (now the fifth generation) and integrates four wineries: CVNE, Imperial (autonomous winery within the original CVNE winery) , Royal Vineyard and Contino Vineyards. In its long history, CVNE has always been characterized by respecting tradition, delicately adapting it to new times, becoming a true reference for fans of Riojan wine from all over the world.
With only six years of life, CVNE began to receive awards in international competitions, serving as a boost for the winery. Thus, in the following years, the legendary studio of A. Gustave Eiffel designed what is known as the Nave Eiffel, which houses the barrel park and which represented a true architectural revolution at that time. In 1940, the first winemaking warehouse made of concrete in Spain was inaugurated, which is still operating at full capacity today, and in 1989 the El Pilar winemaking warehouse was born, the first in Spain to operate by gravity and which showed a path that many Other wineries have followed, seeking maximum respect for the grape.
At the same time that the infrastructure grew, the prizes continued to accumulate in such renowned places as Antwerp or Bordeaux and between 1915 and 1920 new brands began to appear such as Monopole (the oldest white wine brand in Spain) or Royal Vineyard (elegant aged wines). In 1920 Imperial would arrive, undoubtedly one of the great classic reds of Spain, and in 1973 one of the culminating moments in the history of CVNE occurred: the birth of Viñedos del Contino, the true winery-château of the group. Already in 2013, the Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 would be named the best wine in the world by the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator, marking a historical milestone for Spanish wine.
