En 1982 se anuncio que la ruta final del ferrocarril de las Tierras altas pasaria por Tomatin. Con esto, el vecino John MacDougall, nacido y criado en Tomtain, comenzo a planificar su destileria. La destileria del distrito Tomatin Spey se registro el 8 de Junio de 1897.

Actualmente, la destilería Tomatin se encuentra en las Tierras Altas de Escocia, cerca del pueblo de Tomatin, a aproximadamente 16 kilómetros al sur de Inverness. Fundada en 1897, ha ganado una reputación destacada por la calidad de sus whiskies de malta. Originalmente, la destilería fue concebida para satisfacer la demanda del creciente mercado de whisky en Escocia, y su nombre proviene de la gaélica escocesa, que significa "colina de los robles".

The Tomatin Distillery is located in the Scottish Highlands, near the village of Tomatin, approximately 16 kilometres south of Inverness. Established in 1897, it has gained a distinguished reputation for the quality of its single malt whiskies. The distillery was originally conceived to meet the demand of the growing whisky market in Scotland, and its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'hill of oaks'.
