A remote island. Unpredictable weather. A community that has learned to thrive here. Every element of Islay is a faithful ally to our whisky. Sure, we've perfected an ingenious process over the years. But when we think about what makes Laphroaig, it all comes down to a stroke of geographical luck and a whole lot of hard work.

Like many great stories, ours has its share of bold characters. It's a tale of conflict, redemption, and triumph that has shaped Laphroaig into what it is today. It's a whisky heritage forged by family and friendship, to which we dedicate our lives. A tradition of doing things differently, with the best of our past at the heart of our unyielding, indigenous character.

This philosophy has certainly held our interest over the years. And it's given us more than a few interesting anecdotes. So, without further ado, here's the story of how we became Laphroaig.

We are very fortunate here on Islay. Kilbride Brook provides us with an abundant supply of turbid, mineral-rich water. We use it as a coolant throughout the whisky-making process, and it is one of the main ingredients in Laphroaig, contributing smooth, turbid, and flavorful notes to our whisky. As for our soil, our peat bogs are different from those found on the Scottish mainland. There are no forests on Islay, so the plants that nourish the peat are primarily heather, lichen, and moss. These plants give Laphroaig its distinctive island herbal qualities and character. There is also ancient marine vegetation from when Islay was submerged. The influence of this vegetation on our peat gives Laphroaig its maritime character and is one of the main differences from mainland peat. So, from the land and water to our excellent whisky.
