Tempranillo is a red grape native to Spain, known for its fundamental role in the production of some of the country's most prestigious wines, such as those of Rioja and Ribera del Duero .
The name Tempranillo comes from the word "temprano", reflecting that this grape tends to ripen earlier than other varieties.
Characteristics of the Tempranillo grape:
- Color : Produces wines with a deep, dark, reddish color.
- Aromas and flavors : They are often described as wines with flavors of red and black fruits (cherry, plum, raspberry), with nuances of tobacco, leather, vanilla and spices, especially when the wine has been aged in oak barrels.
- Body : It has a medium to full body, depending on the region and winemaking style.
- Acidity and tannins : Moderate acidity and tannins, which gives it a balanced structure and allows it to age well in barrels.
Regions where it is grown:
- Spain : It is the main grape of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, although it is also grown in other regions such as Toro, Navarra and La Mancha.
- Portugal : Known as Tinta Roriz in northern Portugal, it is a key variety in Douro wines and in the production of Port wine.
- Other regions : It has also been successfully planted in countries such as Argentina, the United States (particularly in California), and Australia.
It is a very versatile grape, which can produce wines that are both young and fresh, as well as aged and complex.
